What To Do When Your New Job Sucks

What To Do When Your New Job Sucks A friend of mine just asked me this question: My new job is not going well. The culture is not good, the expectations are different than what I was led to believe. Im at a loss! What should I do? Heres some background: My friend is a professional with some great experience and a solid resume, but has just ended a too-long job search. It was stressful, and we all know how a long job search takes a toll on our psyche, not to mention or finances. A long job search is just something that needs to end. So woohoo! He ended it! BUT what seemed like a great job is turning out to be a lemon. What should he do? Below are some of my thoughts. Id love to hear your thoughts (leave a comment so we can all see them). My first question to him was: Are you in danger of losing your job?   Im not an opportunist, nor do I think you should take advantage of a company or person. But, you were hired to do a job. If you can do the job, and get whatever fulfillment you can elsewhere (from your family, hobbies, netflix, etc.), then maybe reconsider what a job is to and for you. The basic premise of a job, maybe even the social/job contract, is that you sell something (time, expertise, etc.) for something (money and maybe benefits). If you think that your job will give you money (see part of the social/job contract ) AND fulfillment, you might be asking too much. Im absolutely not saying that you should not be fulfilled in life, but looking at your employer to give you fulfillment the way you want/need it is, in my opinion, unfair to the employer. The reason I asked this question is to understand your urgency. If you are going to lose your job, you have a high level of urgency. But if you have a few months, and can weather the storm, then stick with it, keep your paychecks and benefits, and do the stuff below. If you are in danger of losing your job, my advice might be a little different than if you werent in danger hence, my first question. That brings me to My first bit of advice was: Look for another job. ALWAYS be looking for another job! Ive been doing JibberJobber for 13.5 years. Ive seen all kinds of people out of work. Highly educated, high performances, engineers, sales professionals, dentists hardly anyone is immune to unemployment. Even those in super high demand are not immune to job changes (horrible bosses, toxic cultures, companies closing, companies not paying (run out of money)), etc. Years ago my friend Ash said that he got daily Monster alerts with new job opportunities. Ash was happily and well employed, and I was surprised to learn that he had his ear to the ground as much as he did. I asked him why and he said you never know what might come up. He wasnt looking, but he sure had a good idea of who was hiring for what, and what his Plan B, Plan C, Plan etc. would be. I think we all need to adopt this mindset. That is why I cringe when my JibberJobber users delete their account (and all of their data!) when they find a job. Congrats on the new gig, I think, but see you back in two to five years. I dont care how much you love your job, how new you are there, how secure (cough cough) your job is you should always do something for your career. So, starting yesterday, look for a new job! Next, fix your finances. I believe that we have an unhealthy relationship with money. I see this manifested in three different ways: Too much debt. Way, way too much debt. Debt is a harsh master. Even if you get a low interest rate, it is money that hangs over your head like a dark cloud. I know that some debt seems unavoidable, but our unhealthy relationship and the debt we carry are related. Not living with a budget. I know, this is hard. But financial winners do it. Its like a money diet. Im not saying it has to be restrictive or horrible, but its watching what we earn and what we spend (calories in, calories out) and knowing where our money is at and being in control. We generally dont do that, so when we have a change in our income or expenses, it can be jarring. When you have the control over your money that a budget gives you, losing your job is still hard, but its not too shocking to your finances (as it would be if THEY were in control of you). Fear of actually having or earning money. This is a weird phenomena that I see too often: people who have a problem with actually earning a decent living. Its like having money, or having wealth (*shudder*), is a bad thing. Heaven forbid we earn what we are worth. Heaven forbid we are valued by someone for being awesome at something. I want to be valued for what Im worth (and maybe 25% more :p) why shouldnt you be valued for what you are worth? I know there are lots of ideas on money and budgeting and debt learn about it. Master it. Be in control of it, and plan for the future while you can enjoy the present. When you are out of control with your money, a job change can be a devastating blow. Note that this is definitely a marathon, so when I say fix your finances, Im not saying fix them today, but get on the right path, and continue on that path making progress. Network. This is the job search of the working person. You should always be networking. You should network with people at your company, people at industry lunches, you should go to monthly meetups with people in your industry or profession, you should network with them on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or wherever they network. You should also be very kind and helpful to job seekers. Job seekers are networkers on steroids. They should be talking with (or at least know about) many professionals and companies in your space. Be kind to them. Its the right thing to do, and building your network of job seekers might be beneficial to your career one day. Networking is career management. You should never stop doing it. Ever. Personal Branding. Your personal brand is your reputation. Its how others talk about you. Its how others think about you. It could be tied to your competencies, or it could be tied to your likability. Your personal brand is at risk of being harmful if you dont (a) know what it is and (b) work to make it be what you want it to be, on purpose. If you let others decide your brand, and you kind of dont care, that may bite you later. I encourage you to be very purposeful about your personal brand. I have a Pluralsight course on how to develop a killer personal brand. This course came from years of learning about branding, and from many of my presentations. I can get you a 30 day pass just message me. Im sorry that you dont like your job. You got sold one thing and you ended up with another. That recently happened to me. It sucks. But, you are empowered to take control over what you have. You dont have to take what an employer gives you, and you should always practice wise career management! Heres whats rising from the grave of traditional PR

Heres whats rising from the grave of traditional PR I love RealSelf. Its a site that educates women about choices for looking younger. I have written a lot about how anti-aging information is essential for managing ones career. Aging is not equal in the workplace. Women are penalized much more heavily than men. So women can gain power in the world through knowledge of the tools for looking younger. But mainstream media is reluctant to recommend that women turn to a resource like RealSelf. Those reporters dont like the reality of the world they live in, so they dont write about it. Thats why public relations professionals should scrap the traditional pitch to mainstream media saying that is almost cutting edge, except that Obamas team beat me to it: Time magazine has great analysis on why Obamas campaign team was so effective. Incoming press secretary Robert Gibbs pointedly told the New York Times magazine that Obama never sat down with the Washington Post Editorial Board. You could go to Cedar Rapids and Waterloo [Iowa} and understand that people werent reading the Washington Post Obama posts weekly addresses on YouTube, and Gibbs answers questions via video on change.gov. But the big problem with PR pitches to print media is that there are too many failure paths. There is nothing to click. You have to make a note to yourself, while reading the paper, to go check out something online. And then you write a link that is prone to typos and then you cant lose the note. All this means a newspaper pitch is unlikely to go viral. Pete Blackshaw, from Consumergeneratedmedia.com, says, PR is not the owner of the story. There are still some PR people who are great at convincing the mainstream media to pick up their clients story. But today, the story, if it goes anywhere, will grow through consumers, online. The good news is that finally, theres a social media tool that people expect to see pitches on. No longer do PR types have to annoy bloggers to the point that bloggers create blacklists. Now publicity mavens have a spot of their own, and, big news, the bloggers love trolling Twitter for good pitches. Heres how it works: The online influencers are on Twitter. They send traffic to blogs and Facebook and StumbleUpon. And those people email their friends, in community-wide missives, and thats how something becomes viral. The only catch is that PR folks need to get good at pitching in 140 characters. And sure you can do it without Twitter. But in this situation, Twitter is hard to beat. Brands will adopt Twitter for everything from media/influencer outreach to consumer service to crisis communities. But more than any push channel, Twitter will give consumersadvocates and criticsunprecedented access to corporate personnel, and vice versa, says Scott Monty, author of the Social Media Marketing Blog. But even the best viral campaigns are not as effective as real conversations. Companies will participate in the conversation instead of paying people to control it. The consumers who love the company and help vet the storyline will also be keen to help the company succeed promoting that storyline in guided content, according to Todd Defren, who blogs at pr-squared.com. This is happening now. Were in a recession. So it makes sense that instead of paying expensive PR agencies to work their magic on outdated media gatekeepers you save the money. Instead, train passionate employees and customers to have authentic conversations about the brand. Here is a great example: When bombs went off in Mumbai last November, American Express immediately went through their databases to find any customers who might be there. American Express called each customer to see if they needed cash, housing or help getting a way out of the city. I didnt find this out from the news. The gatekeepers of the media world wouldnt print this. Theyd think it was too much like PR. I heard it from my mom, who works at AmEx. And it didnt feel like PR at all: She was genuinely proud to work for a company that would do that so she wanted people to know. And Im telling you because I dont care if something sounds like PR or not. I care if I got a chill when I heard the story. And I did. Note to AmEx: This is your new PR. Compliments of all of us. Because were all in this business of PR now. (For a great overview of social media and PR, read interviews by Peter Kim in Social Media Predictions 2009.)

Writing a Resume Address With a Unit Number

Writing a Resume Address With a Unit NumberWriting a resume address with a unit number has never been more important than it is today. Whether you are looking for a job in the medical field or a job in the legal field, having your address and unit number on your resume is a great way to send a message. How To Resume Writing A Song In The Sims 4

How To Resume Writing A Song In The Sims 4People who love writing songs usually tend to give the reigns of the creative work to someone else, especially if the song was a big hit. If you would like to get rid of all those unwanted songs and re-create a good story about a particular subject, you can write a song for the Sims 4.This game console is not like any others. Unlike other gaming consoles, this one allows people to not only watch TV, but also to interact with others. Therefore, the majority of Sims games are not very successful in being able to create an emotional connection between the game players and the characters in the game.Writing a song is one way you can create that connection. The other way would be to hire a composer or voice talent. A professional Sim player will therefore realize that composing a song that would catch the interest of a lot of game players would be difficult. However, one can use tools such as Sims Writers to make it easier to write a song. This fre e program allows the writer to get rid of the pressure of writing a song as well as the difficulties of creating a song. It is one of the most popular tools used by writers. All one has to do is download the software and then get to work. There are lessons included that explain the different parts of a song including how to form chords and various melody types. The software also gives examples of many songs, which enables the user to see what the song should sound like before it is written down. The Sims Writers software is easy to use and requires just a few minutes of the writer's time. It does not matter if the person writing the song has no prior knowledge of composing or singing. Since the Sims Writers uses templates and key sounds from songs that are already popular, the process becomes a lot easier.Once the writer uses the templates and key sounds from songs that are already popular, it is possible to compose a song without much effort and expertise. The most challenging part o f the song writing will be to find the right melody since it must fit the concept of the song perfectly. Then again, using these tips, the writer will be able to write a song that the Sims 4 will appreciate and enjoy. Moreover, it will be more likely that the song will be recognized by other players. The reason is that there is no shortage of songs to choose from on the Sims store.

Delegate - Give Employees the Freedom to Grow and Learn - Hallie Crawford

Delegate - Give Employees the Freedom to Grow and Learn The rise of project management software has made it easier for managers to delegate tasks and communicate with employees, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re delegating well. Many supervisors continue to micromanage, miscommunicate and stress out their employees with the help of modern technology. Follow the advice of these 16 professionals, including Certified Career Coach , to learn how to delegate effectively with project management software. Certified career coach found being proactive was an important step for employees on the receiving end of micromanaging behaviors. “If you notice that it happens at a certain time of day, provide your boss with an update an hour in advance of that time. When it occurs before or after a specific meeting, help prepare your manager in advance of that meeting for whatever he needs to report on.” Some managers actually hope to inspire employees to reach this level of proactivity as a sign they can be left alone.
